Jewels from the River: A Lesson in the Blackberry Patch

As I quiet myself before the Lord, I see the path leading down to the River. There are some ripe blackberries*I see to my left and I am compelled to stop and eat some. They are so sweet and perfect! Each little "bump" is like a bursting explosion of blackberry flavor in my mouth. It is so simple and yet so exquisite! It is like the DNA of the blackberry, if blackberries have DNA, is bursting with excitement of its life mission being fulfilled. It is like the berry is expressing its joy in giving its life to me. It is so strange but it is very precious and I feel so blessed and thankful.

"They are good aren't they?!?" The Lord startles me out of my deep contemplation.

"Yes they are amazing!"

"There are more over here if you would like some." He points near where He is standing. I walk over and pick more berries and we just eat and enjoy them.

"Many people do not enjoy the things I have given them. Creation is shouting at people everywhere, and while some stop to observe and admire, they only see the surface beauty. Of course if everything was examined at length, and at some point it has been, all you would do is walk around and be amazed at blades of grass and butterfly wings. What is troubling is how many of My great wonders are relegated to scientific explanation void of Me.

"True understanding can only come from the One who created the object of study. Some of the most brilliant minds of man have, in the end, been the most devoid of understanding. In their wisdom they became foolish and in their own craftiness they brought judgment on their own heads. It was not My doing per se, unless My creating the natural law of Cause and Effect makes Me guilty. Scientists can see that if they walk off the roof of a ten story building they will most certainly fall to their death. For whatever reason they can see and understand that clearly, but they cannot see their own belief system of My existence, or should I say, non-existence, is faulty.

"All of creation is testifying as we speak. It shouts, "Believe in God and testify with me!" There are scientists that have overwhelming evidence of Me and come to believe, but others are stubborn. Like the Pharisees they see all the evidence right in front of their face, but they refuse to acknowledge it. They will not bend a knee so they are crushed."

As He speaks the last word, He pops a blackberry in His mouth and chews it up.

"So? Have you had enough blackberries?" He asks smiling at me.

"Yes Lord. Thank You for the treat, and for the lesson."

"You're welcome!"

The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Romans 8:19-22

*One summer when I was 16 years old, I stayed with my family in Oregon. We picked blackberries by the bushels full, but I have not picked them since. So to me, this was a very unusual thing to do.
